Many Moms ask about sharing, borrowing or purchasing used breast pumps. While we do carry all of the parts for the Medela Pump In Style, Ameda Purely Yours and Bailey Nurture III, we want our customers to make a fully educated decision about sharing, borrowing or purchasing used breast pumps.
Certain breast pumps are approved for shared users. These include the Bailey Nurture III and Hospital-Grade breast pumps which can be purchased or rented from us. It is important that you purchase a personal kit of all the pieces coming in contact with breast milk when using an approved shared breast pump. Most purchase pumps are not approved for shared use as it is impossible to completely sterilize the pump between users. The FDA warns against sharing single user breast pumps due to the fact that serious pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis can be present in breast milk. If you choose to purchase or borrow a pre-owned breast pump, please consider the following:
· Absolutely do NOT purchase a used breast pump from a stranger or online.
· You sister/cousin/best friend, etc. may not tell you she has or had an infection – no matter how close you are.
· Your sister/cousin/best friend may not yet know that she has or had an infection.
· A new first-quality breast pump is a great investment, considering that the cost of formula is $2,300/year.
· You may not have to purchase the most expensive breast pump. There are a variety of first-quality breast pumps ranging from $40 - $400. We can help you determine which breast pump is right for you based on your needs.
· Mother Nurture offers Breast Pump Trials allowing you to try each pump before you make a purchasing decision. The Breast Pump Trial fee is deducted from the purchase price of the pump if you purchase a pump from Mother Nurture.
