![]() Weekly Latch Check Clinics Fact: Babies
left skin-to-skin with Mother immediately after birth will crawl to the breast
and self attach. Skin-to-skin contact
can be helpful if baby is having difficulty with breastfeeding. See our calendar for current Latch Check Schedule The purpose of our weekly Latch Check Clinics is solely
to assess and correct baby’s latch on the breast. Checking and correcting a latch can be
instrumental in preventing more complicated problems later. We strongly encourage every Mother to attend
a Latch Check Clinic the week after giving birth as breastfeeding often goes perfectly
well in the hospital, but becomes more difficult once you’re home and your
milk comes in. Latch Check Clinics are
performed by Certified Lactation Counselors who have less experience than our
International Board Certified Lactation Consultants and should not be used in
place of a thorough assessment from a more qualified professional if needed. This is an informal group setting and there
is not a thorough history and assessment of all breastfeeding issues. Our counselors know their limitations, so
please follow up with our IBCLC if the counselor recommends you do so. It is also necessary to make an appointment
with our IBCLC if your latch issue is not resolved during the Latch Check
Clinic. You will notice a drastic
improvement in your comfort during Latch Check Clinic if a poor latch is truly
your only problem. Is Latch
